The North Catawba Streetscape boards are linked below.
Old Fort residents, we need your input on the future of our Town. As part of an effort by the McDowell Tourism Authority to invest in the communities of McDowell County, streetscape plans have been created for Main Street and Catawba Avenue. These plans are not final, and we need your input before moving forward.
The McDowell County Tourism Authority (TDA) is investing in the community by identifying strategies for county-wide improvements. The TDA will be seeking funding partnerships with foundations, businesses, industry, and individuals to help finance projects and strategically invest in the Town. Old Fort residents’ tax dollars will not be used for this new infrastructure, improvements, or repairs.
Phase one of the streetscape project encompasses North Catawba Avenue. The plan is attached above. Plan goals are to improve public safety for pedestrians and bikers through wider sidewalks and highly visible crosswalks. The Town also wishes to increase and beautify public spaces in the downtown area. An increase in parking spaces will accommodate a larger number of residents and visitors to our downtown businesses.
This project is phase one of a larger project plan for Main Street and South Catawba Avenue. Due to current safety issues, North Catawba Avenue is the focus of this phase. We hope to host a business owner meeting in the near future to discuss the Main Street and Catawba Avenue streetscape plans in their entirety.
